2023 IP Filings Overview

World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) recently published a report related to overview of 2023 International IP Filings.

In the report 2023 report, there were 272,600 international patent applications, which is a decrease of 1.8% compared to the previous year. ​

The top users of WIPO’s Patent Cooperation Treaty for international patent applications were China with 69,610 applications, followed by the US with 55,678 applications, and Japan with 48,879 applications. ​

The top corporate filers of international patent applications were Huawei Technologies with 6,494 applications, Samsung Electronics with 3,924 applications, and Qualcomm Inc. with 3,410 applications. ​

The top academic filers of international patent applications were the University of California with 531 applications, Suzhou University with 332applications, and the University of Texas System with 217 applications. ​

In 2023, there were 64,200 international trademark applications, which is a decrease of 7.0% compared to the previous year. ​

The top users of WIPO’s Madrid System for international trademark applications were the US with 10,987 applications, Germany with 6,613 applications, and China with 5,473 applications. ​

The top filers of international trademark applications were L’Oréal with 199 applications, BMW AG with 124 applications, and Euro Games Technology with 118 applications. ​

In 2023, there were 25,343 designs in international applications, which is an increase of 1.0% compared to the previous year. ​

The top users of WIPO’s Hague System for designs in international applications were Germany with 4,517 designs, followed by China with 3,758 designs, and the US with 2,668 designs. ​

The top filers of industrial designs were Samsung Electronics with 544 designs, Proctor & Gamble with 525 design and 352 designs followed by LG Electronics with and Porsche AG with 352 designs each. ​
