Protecting Your Ideas from Copycats A good idea often attracts imitators. In fact, businesses frequently face intellectual property disputes, especially in the technology and IT industries. When an idea becomes profitable, competitors may attempt to copy it. Therefore, businesses should consider protecting their intellectual property early. Recognising this problem, April Lim and Gerald Cheong decided to combine their expertise. April specialised in intellectual property, while Gerald focused on graphic design and multimedia. Together, they established Lymesol, an intellectual property boutique in Malaysia. The name Lymesol combines two words: “limelight” and “solution”. “IP protection is very important as it tells people about the brand,” they explained. “And besides being an identifier, a strong brand also instils trust in the consumer.” For example, consumers often associate established brands with quality and reliability. Consequently, strong trademark protection helps businesses maintain their brand identity. Furthermore, Lymesol offers graphic design services to clients who need branding solutions.
From Idea to Product
April and Gerald believe intellectual property protection and graphic design go hand in hand. Therefore, they combined their expertise to create a one-stop solution for businesses. Their services help clients protect their ideas and develop tangible branding materials. These include logos, websites, and other creative assets. “By offering both IP protection and graphic design, we take away the headache of having to search for separate vendors,” they explained. Additionally, combining both services helps the team identify potential trademark conflicts during the design process. As a result, clients may reduce the risk of trademark objections and infringement disputes. “After receiving the initial brief from the client, Lymesol will then brainstorm ideas and concepts based on the client’s requirements,” the team explained. During this process, the team also considers existing registered trademarks. This approach helps identify potential conflicts before clients proceed with trademark applications. According to the original interview, Lymesol achieved encouraging results through its combined design and registration services. The founders reported a 100% success rate for this service at the time. Furthermore, they reported no third-party disputes and very few unsuccessful trademark applications. These achievements encouraged the company to explore further business opportunities. At the time, Lymesol also planned to launch an e-commerce website. The founders wanted clients to engage their services and make payments online. In addition, the company supported NGOs through pro bono projects. The founders also explored creating an intellectual property marketplace. Their vision included helping businesses buy and sell registered or unregistered IP assets.
Your Idea Is Safe with Us
Lymesol aims to challenge the misconception that intellectual property protection is expensive or inaccessible. Many entrepreneurs believe only large corporations need IP protection. However, small businesses and startups also own valuable intellectual property. Therefore, Lymesol strives to make IP services more approachable and accessible. “We want to change this misconception, as we believe IPs are valuable and inexpensive intangible properties that will add value to any business,” April and Gerald explained. The founders also favour a casual and friendly approach when meeting clients. “This is why Lymesol has a more casual approach—don’t be surprised when you see us in T-shirts and jeans or khakis,” they shared. They believe this approach helps clients feel more comfortable discussing legal matters. After all, intellectual property protection should not intimidate business owners simply because it involves legal procedures. Nevertheless, many entrepreneurs still overlook IP protection when developing their business strategies. “Protecting intellectual property is hardly ever on the priority list,” they explained. They frequently encounter business owners who question the need for trademark registration. For example, some entrepreneurs believe their brands are too small to attract imitators. However, waiting until a brand becomes successful may increase the risk of trademark conflicts. For this reason, businesses should consider IP protection during their early development stages.
Securing the Future of Intellectual Property
April and Gerald recognise the importance of educating entrepreneurs about intellectual property rights. Therefore, they actively promote IP awareness among startups, students, and young business owners. They also emphasised the importance of introducing intellectual property concepts at an early stage. Today, many fresh graduates pursue entrepreneurship instead of traditional employment. Consequently, young entrepreneurs should understand how trademarks, patents, and copyrights can protect their businesses. The founders believe that early IP protection can support long-term business growth. “Gone are the days where every fresh graduate must work for someone,” they explained. They also highlighted the growing importance of Malaysia’s startup ecosystem. After all, today’s small business could become tomorrow’s successful international brand. “That’s why we’re focusing a lot on the startup scene—you never know if your idea will be the next ‘unicorn’, and it’s best to have your IP secured before it becomes one.”   Protect Your Intellectual Property in Malaysia Every business starts with an idea. However, turning that idea into a successful brand requires planning and protection. Whether you operate a startup or an established company, intellectual property rights can help safeguard your business assets. Furthermore, early trademark searches and registration can reduce potential legal disputes. At Lymesol IP, we help businesses protect their trademarks, patents, copyrights, and other intellectual property assets
